A. D. Loyd, 80, of Lorain, died Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain following short illness.
He was born April 30, 1927 in Sugar Grove, AK; coming to Lorain in 1948 where he has lived since.
He served in the US Army during World War II, where he earned the American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal.
He worked as a brakeman and flagman for the B & O Railroad for 37 ½ years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the NARVRE group and was also a member of the Black River Lodge #786.
He enjoyed going out to breakfast with the retirees from the railroad, fishing, reading, and gardening.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Metta G. (nee Walker); a son, John Thomas Loyd of Sheffield Township; daughters, Songa Zakowski of North Ridgeville, and Sanwa Szilagyi of Avon; 13 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sheila Bogans in 1996; a great granddaughter, Hope Smith in 2002; parents, Admiral Loyd and Mamie (nee Swint) Loyd.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 4:30 p.m.
