Aida Martinez

March 28, 1930 — January 4, 2023

Aida Rosa Martinez (nee Arocho), age 92, passed away unexpectedly on January 4, 2023 in Florida following a brief illness.

Born March 28, 1930 to Antonio and Isabel (nee DeJesus) Arocho in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Aida moved to the Lorain area in the 1950s.  A successful businesswoman, she ran the Arocho family’s store in Utuado, performing various tasks such as bookkeeping, sales and ordering. She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel.

She enjoyed going to church, riding her bicycle, cooking, gardening and being outdoors.  Above all her home was her heart and she loved spending time with family and friends as well as sitting on her porch with her husband and friends.  One part of her home that was especially close to her heart was the basement which her husband constructed with his own hands, along with the collective effort from his sons and friends.  She took pride in knowing that the family made many enjoyable memories, had fun and were free to be themselves in not the “man cave,” but the “family cave.”

Surviving are her children, Nelson (Candice) Martinez, Edgar (Sandra) Martinez, Orlando Martinez and David (Nicole) Martinez Jr.; daughter, AidaLiz “Ali” Martinez; grandchildren, Meghan (Graig) Szakats, Brittany “Bri” Martinez, Ricardo “Rico” Hernandez, Orlando Martinez II., Samuel Martinez, Evan E. Martinez and Sophia Martinez; great grandchildren, Eleyna Szakats and Emmett Szakats; brother, Antonio Arocho Jr. and her sisters, Genovena Boneta, Emyne Berrios and Rosemary Bibler.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, David Martinez Sr.; both of her parents; brothers, Jose Arocho, Ernesto Arocho, Angel Luis Arocho, Ermelindo Arocho as well as her sisters, Elsa Gonzalez and Irma Silva.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13 from 8:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain.  Rev. William Thaden will officiate.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
