Alexander E. Babics

Alexander E. Babics, age 86, of Lorain, died on Friday, September 21, 2007 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.


He was born on September 18, 1921 in Lorain and has been a lifelong resident.


He served in the United States Army during World War II as a staff sergeant in the 823rd bomb squadron, serving as a B25 engineer, assistant crew chief and gunner. He participated in these battles and campaigns; Air Offensive Japan, New Guinea, Western Pacific, and Air Combat Borneo. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars, Philipine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, and the WWII Victory Medal.


He worked at American Shipbuilding Company for 33 years, retiring in 1983. Prior to this he worked at Fruehauf. After retiring he worked several years at Kuhn Fabricating, Lorain.


He was a member of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Lorain.


He was a member of AARP, he was a life member of Veterans of Foreign War, Post 451 and Boilermakers Union, # 744.


Alex enjoyed fishing, gardening, golfing, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians, and enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.


He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Helen (nee Bozsoki) Babics, sons: Edward of Amherst, Gregory, of Lorain, daughters, Sandra Karpinski, of Lorain and Helen A. Babics, of Lorain, 4 grandchildren, 2 great granddaughters, many nieces and nephews and sister: Helen Hurley, of Lorain.


He was preceded in death by his parents: John and Rose (nee Szabo) Babics, brother, John and sisters: Margaret Docs, Rose Ward, Mary Balko and Ethel Babics.


The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. James Schmitz, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign War Post #451 of Lorain, will conduct full military honors.
