Alexander Alex Romek, 85, of Lorain, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West, Lorain following a short illness.
Born May 10, 1919 in Curtisville, PA, he came to Lorain in 1947.
He served as a gun commander in the US Army during World War II as a ranking sergeant in Company C of the 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He participated in the battles and campaigns of Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, France and Rhineland. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars.
He worked as a die setter at Fruehauf Trailer Co., Avon for 23 years. Following this, he then worked for Gilford Instrument Laboratories, Oberlin as a die setter, retiring in 1983 after 13 years there.
He was a member of the 704th Armed Division Company C Tank Destroyers, and enjoyed working in the yard and working in his work shop doing wood work.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Frances (nee Olejar), and a daughter; Christine DiFilippo, of Lorain, a grandson, and 2 great grandsons, a sister; Elizabeth Pollock of Gibsonia, PA.
He was preceded in by his parents; Andrew and Anastasia Hromiko, brothers; Andrew Hromiko and Fred Hromiko, a sister: Nellie Sowards.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 9:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. The Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 of Lorain, and the American Legion Post 30 of Lorain, will conduct full military honors on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
