Alfred H. "Fritz" Danicki, age 81, of Lorain, died on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, West, following a short illness.
He was born on March 14, 1924 in Lorain, and has been a lifelong resident.
He served as a fireman first class in the United States Navy during World War II aboard destroyer escort, the USS O'Neill. He participated in the invasion of Leyte, Okinawa and Iwo Jima and received the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 3 stars, Victory Medal, African European Middle Eastern Medal, American Area Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 star.
He was employed as a Central Rigger at Lorain Works US Steel for 43 years, retiring in 1985.
Alfred was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and their Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local #1104.
A talented fast pitch softball pitcher, Alfred was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. His softball pitching career entailed over 25 championships, including city, county, district and Big Eight League titles. His pitching record includes over 1000 strike outs, 17 no hit games, 8 one hit games, and 88 strike outs in a six game stint.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Lillian (nee Springowski), son: Mark A. Danicki of Avon, daughter: Catherine A. Danicki of Lorain, 2 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Adelbert and Anna (nee Skolnicki) Danicki, and sister: Frances Waldecki and brother: John Danicki.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 22, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. The family will also receive friends on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. until time of mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, E. 28th and Elyria Ave., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Kevin Shemuga, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
