Andrew Z. Varouh, 98, of Amherst, died suddenly on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center - West, Lorain, following a short illness.
He was born June 29, 1907 in Smyrna, in Asia Minor; he came to the United States in 1955 and has lived in Amherst since. In 1962 he became a US citizen and was proud of his diverse heritage.
He worked as a security guard for Nordson Corp, Amherst for 20 years, retiring in 1976.
He was an active member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Lorain, where he served as a board member and treasurer for many years. He was also a reader, altar server and sang in the church choir. He was a member of the Order of Ahepa Elyria-Lorain Chapter 144, A.M.H.A.S., and the Pan-Cretan Association.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.
He is surviving by his son, Lucky, of Cleveland; a daughter, Toula Oberlies, of Indianapolis, Indiana; 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; a brother, George Varouh of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Theodora "Dora" (nee Solomides) in 2005; his parents, Zacharias Varouh and Artistea (nee Kondouris) Varouh; a brother, John; sisters, Evangalina and Maritsa.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a Trisayion service will be at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Michael Gulgas, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
