Arnold "Arnie" Fries, age 87, of Avon Lake, formerly of Lorain, died on Friday, December 12, 2008 at Altercare of Mentor Center, following a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.
He was born on August 17, 1921 in Huron, Ohio. He lived most of his life, worked, and raised his family in Lorain, moving to Avon Lake in 2002. Arnie was in the United States Army, where during World War II, he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He was employed as a line worker and as a member of the maintenance crew at Ford Motor Company, at both the Lorain and Avon Lake plants. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Avon Lake, and former member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, Lorain.
Arnie was previously a member of the Moose Lodge of Lorain and St. Peter''s Seniors. He was vice president of the UAW Local 425 Retirees Association. Arnie enjoyed calling BINGO at St. Mary, Lorain. He had also enjoyed traveling, gardening, especially helping manage the tomato garden for Towne Center Community Campus. His most recent hobby was raising African Violets.
He is survived by his sons; David J. (Kathy), of Painesville Twp., and Richard A. (Lynn Johnson), of Lakewood, daughters; Patricia Ann Hart, of Leesburg, FL, Suzanne (Scott) Pollack, of Middleburg Heights, and Mary Catherine (Martin) Vicens, of Winston Salem, NC, 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, brothers; Linus "Lenny", of Goldwater''s, TX, Ben, of Grandville, MI, Earl of Cannonsburg, MI and Paul, of Wakeman, sisters; Mary Schultz, of Norwalk and Emily Goff, of Grand Rapids, MI, sisters-in-law, Dolores Fries, of Lorain and Joan Gimms, of Elyria, and his brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Mim Sechkar, of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Margaret T. (nee Sechkar), on Nov. 20, 1999, a daughter, Jean Marie Clodwick, in March 2008, his parents; Earl Fries and Amelia Boose Fries, brothers; Delbert, Vernon and Joseph, sister Rita and a sister in infancy.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 15, from 6-8 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, and on Tuesday, December 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Friends will also be received on Wednesday, December 17, from 9:00 am until the time of funeral mass at 9:30 am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 32929 Lake Road , Avon Lake , OH 44012. The Rev. Fr. Timothy O'Connor, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens , Avon , with full military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #451 and the American Legion Post 30.
