Benito Ortiz Rivera, age 94, of Lorain, died on Thursday, January 27, 2009.
He was born on August 23, 1914, in Guayama, Puerto Rico, moving to Lorain in 1947. He was employed at Lorain Works US Steel, in the maintenance department, for 28 years, before retiring in 1978. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union Local 1104, and was a former member of Sacred Heart Chapel.
Benito is survived by his sisters; Teresa O. Solis, of Connecticut, Carmen I. Rivera, Carmen G. Garcia, and Tomasita O. Torres, all of Puerto Rico, his brother, Jesus M. Ortiz, of Lorain, brother-in-law, Miguel Garcia, of Lorain, his nieces and nephews, who were always like his children; Mrs. (Darryl) Eileen Brooks, Frances Garcia, Mrs. (Pedro) Lori Sanchez, Miguel, Freddie, Harry and Thomas Garcia. He is also survived by his other nieces and nephews, along with great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Matilde Rivera and father, Thomas Ortiz Mares, step-mother, Santo O. Morales, sister, Matilde O. Garcia, and a nephew, Abel Garcia.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 29, from 5 to 7 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be held Friday, at 11:00 am. The Rev. Efrain Senquez will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
