Bernice Gimben (nee Slobedzian), age 91, of Elyria, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Avon Oaks Nursing Home.
She was born on March 22, 1920, in Lorain, living most of her life in Elyria. She was a 1938 graduate of Lorain High School.
Bernice was employed as a Medical Transcriber at St. Joseph's Hospital for over 20 years, before retiring in 1985. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church, where she was also a member of the St. Mary's Sisterhood.
She enjoyed knitting and traveling.
Bernice is survived by her daughters; Gloria (David) Mertz, of Cary, NC, Marianne (Max) Powrie, of Wooster, and Rose Marie Hanko, of Elyria, 6 grandchildren; Michael and Amy Hunkley, Jeff and Christine Powrie, and Craig and Derrick Mertz, 7 great grandchildren; Tim Hunkley, Ian Powrie, Alex Masgras, Katelyn Stottlemire, Nathan Masgras, Lauren Powrie, and Michael Hunkley, and a sister, Virginia Waratinsky, of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Michael, in 1998, and her parents; Frank and Anna (nee Holojat) Slobedzian.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 2, from 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am, at Ss. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church, 2238 East 32nd Street, Lorain, OH 44055. The Very Rev. Fr. Basil Stoyka, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, 2238 East 32nd Street, Lorain, Ohio 44055.
