Betty Welter (nee Carney), age 92, of Vermilion, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2016, at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, after a sudden illness.
She was born on December 6, 1923 in Lorain. In 1993, she moved to Pensacola, FL, and moved back to the Lorain area in 2011. She was a life-long native of Lorain. After graduation from St. Mary's High School, she went to work at The Morning Journal in their circulation department. Later in life she happily served as a crossing guard for the City of Lorain. Betty took the greatest pride in taking care of her family and home and being the best "Domestic Princess" they've ever known. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where she and her late husband were on the church's bowling league. As a member of the Gingham Girls, she and her twin sister, Jean, were involved in the dedication ceremony for both bridges in Lorain. She also belonged to the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, and always enjoyed traveling with the Paduan Group. Betty loved baking, being best remembered for her amazing chocolate chip cookies. Betty adored her grandchildren and they always provided her with much joy.
She is survived by her children; Robert, of Brooklyn, NY, Bonnie (James) Hite, of Elyria, Nancy (Scott) Zipp, of Vermilion, and Thomas (Josefina), of Pensacola, FL, her 9 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert R., in 2008, a daughter, Gail Ryan, in 1975, her parents; Daniel and Mabel (nee Grondin) Carney, and her brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 21, from 4-7 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Her funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, at 10:30 am, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church,1305 East Erie Avenue, Lorain. (Everyone to meet at church.) Fr. John C. Retar, Pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
