Camilo Gonzalez

July 18, 1925 — October 16, 2007

Camilo "Lilo" Gonzalez, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at his home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Gonzalez was born in Lares, Puerto Rico in 1925 and came to Lorain in 1948. He was employed at US Steel, National Tube for 25 years before a work-related accident forced his early retirement in 1973.

Mr. Gonzalez was a founding member of Sacred Heart Chapel, a leader of the Cursillo Charismatic movement, a member of the Holy Name Society and a Minister of the Eucharist. Camilo "Lilo" was a volunteer with St. Vincent DePaul Society, and worked tirelessly through Lorain's churches and social service organizations, assisting new residents obtain the necessary information and resources to develop into productive citizens. In 1997 he was named Hispanic of the Year by Sacred Heart Chapel. Camilo was an avid gardener and political analyst.


Survivors include his wife Julia Gonzalez (nee Segarra) of 58 years, six daughters; Betsy Gonzalez, of Louisville, KY, Nilsa Ward, Evelyn Gonzalez, Yolanda Donohue, Vivian Rivera, and Leticia Mills, all of Lorain, and one son, Jesus Gonzalez, of Sarasota, FL, 16 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. In addition he is survived by six sisters; Virginia Rodriguez and Maria Segarra, both of Lorain, Emelina Molina, Catalina Diaz, and Delia Rivera, all of Youngstown, Martina Cardona, of Lares, Puerto Rico and a brother, Joe Gonzalez, of Lorain.


He was preceded in death by his father, Severeano Gonzalez Lopez, Mother, Carmen Velez Robles, sister, Carmen Pagan, and a son, William Gonzalez.


The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 18, from 4 - 9:00 pm, at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain, and on Friday morning, from 8:30 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 9:30 am. The Rev. Fr. William Thaden, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, is handling arrangements.
