Carl S. Grasa, age 78, of Lorain, died on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Specialty Hospital of Lorain, Amherst.
He was born on March 27, 1931 in Lorain and has been a lifelong resident here.
Carl was a 1950 graduate of Lorain High School.
He served during the Korean Conflict in the US Army as a sergeant, where he was stationed in Berlin, Germany.
He began his working career at Berger's Pharmacy in South Lorain and was then employed at Fruehauf Trailer Co. for 20 years. He then worked for his father-in-law, Allen A. Perhach, at Lorain Steel Fabricators Inc. for 20 years before retiring from Marathon Steel Products in 1997.
He was a life long member of St. Vitus Catholic Church, Lorain.
Carl was a member of the Waverly Hunt Club, Croatian Fraternal Union of America and was a life member of the BPOE #1305.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening, yard work, cooking for his children and grandchildren, and mowing his farm on his tractor.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley (nee Perhach), daughter, Carla (Ken) Hama, of Amherst, son, Allen (Michelle) Grasa, of Lorain, grandchildren, Brian Hama, Andrea Hama and soon to be born, Sarah Grasa, sister, Margaret (Chris) Costin, of Cary, NC, nephews, Chris Costin, of North Ridgeville, Mark & Paul Costin, of Cary, NC, 10 great nephews and 3 great nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Steve Grasa in 1972 and Mary (nee Slanac) Grasa
in 1966 and sister, Ann Marie Grasa in 1943.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a 7:00 pm St. Vitus Parish Rosary will be held. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 9:30 a.m., also in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 a.m. mass at Nativity BVM Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Robert Glepko, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with full military honors provided by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20.
