Cecil Vanderpool, 90 of Lorain, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home, Lorain following a 3 month illness.
He was born Feb. 1, 1920 in Packard, KY, coming to Lorain in 1940 where he as resided since.
Cecil served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS San Jacinto.
He worked as a custodial engineer for the Lorain School Board for 40 years, retiring in 1983. Prior to that, he worked at Thew Shovel in Lorain, for 20 years.
Cecil was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church, Lorain, where he had served many positions including treasurer and head trustee. He also served the church as a custodian and was active in missionary work.
He was a member of the Golden Crescent Square Dancers, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1442 of Amherst, the Lake Erie Moose Lodge #552 of Lorain, and the Mid Century Masonic Lodge #725 in Avon Lake. He was active with the Boy Scouts for many years, and served as scout master for troop 307.
Cecil enjoyed traveling, having visit all 50 states, and gardening. He also enjoyed camping, especially at Camp Wahoo where he had camped for nearly 30 years.
Surviving are his sons, Vernon R. Vanderpool of Amherst, James J. of Avon, and Paul E. Vanderpool of Mechanicsville, KY; a daughter, Kathleen F. Vanderpool of Lorain; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Tempa Cleo (nee Bryant) Vanderpool in 2008; and several brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 11:00 am in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. Rev. Karen Hollingsworth, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, Lorain, will officiate.
