Charles G. Kennelley, 87, of Amherst, died Friday, February 25, 2011 at Kingston of Vermilion, following a lengthy illness.
He was born August 30, 1923 in Dunkirk, NY, moving to Lorain in 1945. In 1981, he resided Marblehead until 2000, when he moved to Amherst.
Charles served in the US Army during World War II as a sergeant. He participated in the New Guinea Campaign, and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
He worked at Lorain Works US Steel as a crane operator for 35 years, retiring in 1987.
Charles was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst, and the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and boating. While living in Marblehead, he also enjoyed spending time at the senior center.
Surviving is his wife of 11 years, Emily (nee Mecera); daughters, Linda Kurianowicz of Lorain, and Kimberly (Kelly) Morrow of Amherst; grandchildren, Tracy (Mike) Ames, Tina Kurianowicz, Ariel Morrow and Jennifer Morrow; brothers, Robert of Clearwater, Fla., and Rollie of Holiday, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Eileen J. (nee Nairy) Kennelley, in 1995; parents, James and Emma (nee Schlining) Kennelley; brothers, Bill and Jim; sisters, Mary Callahan, Dorothy Burgess, and Emily Saddler.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm with Mr. Dan Hancock, Deacon of St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiating. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Rev. Earl Connor, pastor of North Lake Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. The Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, will conduct military honors.
