Charles Albert Norton, 87, of Lorain, died Sunday, February 26, 2006 at Kingston of Vermilion following a lengthy illness.
He was born November 21, 1918 in Amherst Township, and lived in Avon from 1947 until he moved to Lorain in 1985 where he has lived since.
He was a 1936 graduate of Clearview High School. He then served in the US Navy as a Pharmacist Mate Second Class during World War II. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for his service in the Navy, the European Theater Ribbon with 2 stars, and the Victory Medal.
He worked in the rolling mill as a crane operator at Lorain Works US Steel for 43 years, retiring in 1980.
Mr. Norton was a well-known and respected Concord grape grower, having supplied Welch's Co with grapes from 1950 to 1980. He also sold grapes and various produce at Jamie's Flea Market for many years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lorain since 1935 where he was a member of the choir and served as deacon, treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104, and the National Grape Growers Association.
He was a self-taught horticulturist, a bible scholar and he enjoyed gardening.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Helen (nee Ilcisko), daughters: Ruth Elaine Moorhead of Marion, Indiana, and Rita K. Paulsen of Toledo, a grandson, and a sister, Helen Seitman of N.E. Hartville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Homer Norton and Esther (nee Hoyt) Norton, a son, Thomas in 1942, daughter: Nancy Norton in 1946, brothers: Rollin, Ray, James and Clarence, sisters: Muriel, Eunice, Beryl and Ruby.
The family invites friends to join them for a Celebration of Life on Sunday, April 23, 2006 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1510 Cooper Foster Park Road, West, Lorain.
