Charles Stoyka, age 87, of Avon, died on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a short illness.
Born on August 22, 1922 in Czechoslovakia, he lived in Blainsburg, PA, before settling in Lorain County area many years ago.
Charles served as a locomotive fireman with the 733 rd Railway Operations Battalion in the United States Army during World War II. He participated in the Campaigns of Rhineland and Central Europe and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Occupation Medal and the Victory Ribbon.
He was employed in #4 Seamless Mill for 35 years at US Steel, retiring in 1982. Charles was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Lorain, and the United Steelworkers Union Local 1104. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and loved his flowers.
Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maria; and a sister, Mary Vargo of Bobtown, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Helen (nee Krisfalusy) Stoyka; a brother, John Stoyka, MD; and a sister Helen Matty.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 27th from 12:00 until the time of services at 2:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst, Twp. The American Legion Post 30 combined with the Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 will conduct full military honors.
