Charles Leroy Thompson, 88 of Jacksonville, Florida died at Orange Park Medical Center there on Saturday, August 1, 2009 after an illness of 10 days.
He was born in Lorain on August 14, 1920 and was a life long resident here, graduating from Lorain High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army as a PFC during World War II participating in the battles of Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded a Good Conduct and Victory Medals, African Campaign Medal and European, African, Middle East Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and one bronze arrow head.
Charles worked as an electric motor repair man in The Electric Shop of Lorain Works US Steel retiring in 1982 with 47 years of service. He was a member of United Steel Workers Union Local 1104 and VFW Post 451. He enjoyed motorcycling and cooking.
Surviving are his sons Charles Lee (Diane Lynn) Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida and James (Nora) of Lorain, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded by a brother, William, in 1988 and sisters Goldie Molnar, Doris Pochurek in 1990, Margaret Zimmerman, and Leona Walters in 1983.
Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township at 2:00 pm. Amherst Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. The Dovin Funeral Home 2701 Elyria Ave. Lorain is in charge of arrangements. For online condolences go to
