David Benco, of Westlake, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, one day after his 83rd birthday, at St. John Westshore Hospital, Westlake, following a very short illness.
He was born on November 17, 1926 in Byesville, Ohio and was raised there. He joined the Army in 1945, where he was stationed in the Phillipines. After the service he resided in Lorain, where he met his wife, later moving them to Bellevue, where he worked for the Railroad as a carman.
He was a life member of the Eagles, Aerie #490, the VFW Post #1238, the American Legion Post #46, and NARVE. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and traveling with his wife. As a self-taught musician for many different instruments, he always enjoyed music, whether he was playing it or just listening.
In later years he lived in Westlake with his niece, where he leaves behind his faithfull companion, Bogie Benco.
He is survived by his sister, Ruth Gallupoli and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Gladys (nee Rilko), in 1993, his parents, Andy and Mary (nee Smiak) Benco, brothers, John and Henry and a sister, Pauline Esterle.
Friends may call on Sunday, November 22, 2009 from 1-5 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where Lutheran services will be held on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Jimmy Madsen, pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #30 combined with the Veteran of Foreign War #451..
