Domingo Amador, 86, of Lorain, died suddenly on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Sutter Roseville Medical Center in Roseville, CA while visiting his daughters and family.
Born May 12, 1922 in Kyle, Texas, he lived in Weslaco, Texas before coming to Lorain in 1947. Domingo was in the first group of men to make the Cursillo in 1961 that was held in Austin, Texas. It was this group that was instrumental to bringing the Cursillo Movement to Lorain.
He served as a corporal in the US Army Air Force during WWII, stationed in Saipan for 3 years. He participated in the battles and campaigns of Eastern Mandates, Western Pacific and Air Offensive Japan. He received the Victory, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater, and Good Conduct medals.
Domingo worked as a crane operator in the blast furnace of Lorain Works US Steel for 33 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, the United Steelworkers Union Local #1104, Mexican American Citizens Club, Lorain Community Seniors and Senior Sociables.
Domingo really enjoyed helping with the decorating of the floats, which were sponsored by the Mexican American Citizens Club and entered in the annual Lorain International Festival. He also enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and being with his grandchildren. Every Thursday, he went to St. Anthony at the Our Lady of the Lake Adoration Chapel for a small prayer service.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Romana (nee Sandoval); son, Gilberto "Gil" of Lorain; daughters, Lydia (John) Inchaurregui, Raquel Stein, both of Lincoln, CA and Paula (Jose) Perez, of Lorain; 4 granddaughters, 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Tomas Amador of Weslaco, TX; and sister, Juanita Barron, of Chicago, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Candelario and Filomena (nee Carbajal); a daughter, Otilia Amador; brother, Juan Amador; and sisters, Enriqueta Rios and Juanita Espinoza.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 13, 2009 from 5-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, with a Rosary scheduled at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by mass at 10:00 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Joseph West, OFM Conv. pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with full military honors.
