Dora (Theodora) Varouh (nee Solomides), age 91, of Amherst, died Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, as a result of complications due to pneumonia.
She was born on November 17, 1913 in Alexandria, Egypt. She moved to the United States on July 13, 1955, where she lived in Amherst for the rest of her life.
Dora had attended school in both Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt.
She was a teacher for the Greek language at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and at St. Demetrius Greek Orthodox Church, she had also taught English as a second language at Admiral King High School, and French at Lorain Community College. Dora also volunteered at Amherst Hospital.
She was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church since she had moved here in 1955. She was a long-time member of their choir and was also choir director for some time. Dora was a Sunday school teacher for St. Nicholas and a part-time cantor for the church as well. She was an active member of the Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope. Dora was the Vice President of the BPW (Business and Professional Woman's Organization), and was involved with the International Festival with the Greek Community.
Dora was fluent in 5 languages. She enjoyed being a guest speaker about her experiences to schools and organizations in Lorain and Amherst. She loved children and educating them, as well as herself, and she also enjoyed her family, reading, and writing.
Surviving her is her husband of 64 years, Andrew , a son, Lucky, of Cleveland, a daughter, Toula Oberlies, of Indianapolis, IN, 5 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents; Nicholas and Argyro (nee Sendona) Solomides, brothers; Costas and George, and a sister, Christina.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 5 at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain from 4 - 8 p.m., where a Trisayion Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. There will be funeral services held on Monday, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain. The Rev. Fr. Michael Gulgas will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park.
