Dr. George A. Rafferty, 59 of North Ridgeville, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at home, following a sudden illness.
He was born on February 19, 1951 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, and moved to Buffalo, N.Y. as a child.
George graduated from Starpoint Central High School in 1969. He graduated with honors from the University of Buffalo, with a degree in medicine. He served his residency at Case Western Reserve. Dr. Rafferty headed the department of psychiatry at Buffalo General Hospital and Erie County Medical Center as well.
He loved music and playing guitar. He was active in church, attending Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Avon, and while living in New York, he served as a Eucharistic minister at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Tonawanda.
Surviving is his wife of 39 years, Cathy (nee Paul); a son Adam (Devin) of North Royalton; a daughter, Jaime Benzel of North Ridgeville; sisters, Ann Spaeth of Lorain, and Mary (Joseph) Tornabene of Elyria; a brother, Patrick (Deborah) of Avon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Wave (nee Bennett) Rafferty; and a brother, David.
A private service for the immediate family will be held on Thursday. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, is handling the arrangements.
