Edgar S. Hatcher (Budge) retired Steelworker, Vietnam Vet
Edgar Stanley Hatcher, 64, of Amherst, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
He was born December 2, 1945 in Harold, KY. He moved to the New London area in 1954 and then to Lorain in 1958, where he attended Longfellow Jr. High, Lorain High, and graduated from Admiral King in 1963.
He worked at American Ship, Ford Motor Company and in the auto parts industry and attended Lorain County Community College before entering the U.S. Army in 1966. He served in South Vietnam from March 15, 1967 to March 15, 1968 as an Infantry Sergeant with the 25th Infantry Division (Wolfhounds). He participated in the TET Offensive and was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and various other awards. Upon returning from the Army he worked in auto parts until October 1973 when he was hired at U.S. Steel in Lorain. He worked for U.S. Steel and Republic Steel as a millwright in the Rolling Mill and Utilities Department until retirement in 2003 with 30 years of service. From 1992 until retirement he served USWA Local 1104 as its first Veteran's Committee Chairman and as its Pension Committee Secretary. Also from 1978 he was a realtor working for CRS, Coldwell Banker and Russell Realty of North Ridgeville. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Lorain County Board of Realtors, and Northern Ohio Regional MLS.
He served on the executive boards of VFW post 1662 and the American Legion post 118, both in Amherst, and served on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee. He was also a charter member of Paladin Knights (which supports Ohio Veteran's Home in Sandusky through fundraising events), a member of the Moose Lodge 552 in Lorain and Vietnam Veterans of America and the 25th Infantry Tropic Lightning Association. He was a life member of VFW post 1662 and DAV Chapter 20 of Lorain.
Survivors include daughter, Andrea Jean Hatcher, a school teacher in the Austin, TX area; brothers Jerry Lee Hatcher and David Harold Hatcher both of Lorain, sister Helen Hatcher of Allen, KY; nieces Patricia A. Harris and Brenda S. Akers, both of Lorain; Jennifer Kolesar of Travelers Rest, SC; Penny Del Turco of Amherst; Bridgett Moon of Pikeville, KY; nephews Donnie Kidd of KY, David



Hatcher, Jr of Lorain; Jimmy Hatcher of Montana, Jerry Hatcher, Jr. of Avon; and several grand and great nieces and nephew along with several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Stanley Hatcher in 1977, mother Lillian McCleese in 1994, paternal grandfather David Harold Hatcher in 1957 and paternal grandmother Ada Elizabeth Hatcher in 1980; sisters Anna Lois Hanes in 2001 and Virginia (Ginny Lou) Bentley in 2005; maternal grandfather George Turner and maternal grandmother Elizabeth Akers.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Lorrie Bandagski, pastor of Bethel Chapel Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park. American Legion Post #118, Amherst will conduct military honors.
