Edward Sas

Edward Sas, age 79 of Lorain, died Thursday, March 24, 2005 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain.


Born March 28, 1925 in Lorain, he lived here his entire life. He attended Lorain City schools and graduated from Lorain High School, class of 1943 A.

A World War II veteran of the US Navy, he served as a machinist mate first class in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He also trained and completed deep submergence diving school, serving as diver second class. He served aboard the U.S.S. Milwaukee CL 5, the U.S.S. Valencia AKA 81 and the U.S.S. Southerland. He participated in action at Okinawa, Shima and in occupation of Japan at Nagoya, and Honshu Island, Japan. He received the Victory Ribbon, American Area Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, European African Eastern Ribbon, and Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with one Bronze Star.


He worked at Lorain Works US Steel as a general foreman in the Open Hearth and Bop Shop, retiring in 1983 after 37 years of service.


He was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain, and the Holy Name Society of the church. He was a former member and president of the St. Nicholas School Parent Teacher Unit. He was a life member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Post # 1662 of Amherst, the American Legion Post # 397 of Vermilion, a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 637 of Lorain, the US Steel Lorain Works Management Club and the US Steel Lorain Works Investment Club.


He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and boating.


Surviving are his sons, Edward Jr. of Amherst, William D. of Charlottesville, Virginia, 7 grandchildren, a brother Andrew of Denver, Colorado.


He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Kissman) Sas in 1999, his son, Adam in 1952, his parents, Joseph and Anna (nee Kopcha) Sas, sisters, Catherine Kriz, Mary Chohany, Anna Onufer, brothers, Theodore, Joseph, John, and Steve Sas.


The family will receive friends on Monday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where parastas will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral home followed by Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Nicholas Rachford, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Amherst Veteran Military Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
