Edward S. Wilkins, 89, a lifelong resident of Lorain, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at his residence while under the loving care of New Life Hospice following a 4 month illness.
Ed was Born May 22, 1922 in Lorain; he graduated form Lorain High School class of 1940 B; Elyria Business College and attended Fenn College and Northwestern University.
Ed proudly served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict; serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and Mediterranean Sea as a Radio Operator aboard the destroyer USS MAYRANT. He received the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Medal with 2 bronze stars; World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp.
Ed was most recently employed by First Federal Savings and Loan for 27 years, retiring in 1987 as Vice President. Prior to this, he worked for Lake Terminal Railroad from 1950 to 1960.
Ed was an active member of the former Catholic Church of St. Stanislaus, Lorain, and member and past president of the Holy Name Society, receiving the Diocesan Medallion Circle Award in 1980. He was a parish councilman; Eucharistic Minister and Lector. He also sang in the church choir and served on the churches finance committee. He was currently a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Lorain. Ed was a member of the Senior Fellowship Club of Lorain; Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 451. He enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, reading and spending time with his family.
He enjoyed bowling, golfing and stamp collecting.
Surviving is his son, Edward Wilkins Jr., of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Diane (Bob) Piec of Ontario, Canada, and Monica (Terry) Tomaszewski of Amherst; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; and a brother, Joseph Wilkins of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Irene (nee Serafin) in 2002; his parents, Frank and Sophie (nee Grembowicz) Wilczynski Wilkins; a brother, Stanley Wilkins; and a sister, Lottie Crause.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 4 to 8 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be Monday at 9:30 am followed my Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 418 W. 15th St., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Robert Glepko, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 will conduct military honors.
