Elizabeth "Betty" Nicholson

Elizabeth I. "Betty" Nicholson, 78, of Lorain, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012 at her residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a prolonged illness.
A retired educator, traveler, and philanthropist, Elizabeth spent 38 years as a teacher for the Red Bank New Jersey school system and finished her career as a teacher in Lorain City Schools and at the Lorain Medina C.B.C.F. Elizabeth has spent the majority of her time working with youth. From 1983 to 1989 she served as the director of the Upward Bound Program at the Georgian Court College in Lakewood, New Jersey and later assisted with the Upward Bound Program at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. For the last 15 years, she has been responsible for the Lorain County Urban League mentoring program in Lorain County working with more than one hundred students in Lorain County grades six to nine, who are considered to be at-risk and twenty-two adult mentors.
Betty received her teaching degree from Bennett College with a BA in English and Spanish. She completed her master's at Upper Montclair State College in Montclair, New Jersey and later completed a second masters at Mary Grove College.
Surviving is her brother, Timothy (Ruth) Nicholson of Tinton Falls, NJ, a nephew Derek Nicholson, also of Tinton Falls, and his five children, James (Drusilla) Cousins, and their two sons, David and Michael. Relatives Roy (Flora) Eikerenkoetter, Jr., James (Ruby) Wilson, John (Evelyn) Philman, Earl (Tina) Eikerenkoetter, Jr. and their families, great friend Sylvia DuVall, and a host of loving and caring godchildren, friends, and colleagues the world over.
Betty lent her beautiful soprano voice to the choir in her church, Ss Peter and Paul Orthodox church where she also served on the church council for many years. Betty maintained membership in the NCTE, National Council of Teachers of English, the English Speaking Union, The International Mentoring Association, The Lorain Negro Business and Professional Business Club, Lorain Section of the National Council of Negro Women, National Alliance of Black School Educators, the Lorain County Alliance of Black School Educators, the Buckeye Chapter #46, O.E.S., Prince Hall Affiliate. She served as a board member of the International Mentoring Association for 2 years. She also volunteered at Mercy Regional Medical Center for many years.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a parastas (prayer for the departed) will be at 5:00 pm. Services will also be conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star and the Negro Business and Professional Women's Club. The family will also receive friends on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, 2238 East 32nd Street, Lorain. The Very Reverend Father Basil Stoyka, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Betty's name to the Lorain NBPW Scholarship Fund, PO Box 687, Lorain, Ohio, 44052.
