Elizabeth “Betty” Thompson was called home to heaven on Monday, April 29, 2024, with her husband by her side, holding her hand.
She was born June 26th, 1949, on Burnt Islands, Port Anne, Newfoundland, Canada to Maude (nee Dier) and Stanley Dicks. Though she moved to Ohio when she was eighteen, she proudly maintained her Canadian citizenship and visited her home village often. She loved sitting around with her family and sharing stories of her childhood there. Once moving to Ohio, she settled in Lorain with her loving husband, and they started a family. A few years later they moved permanently to Vermilion. Betty worked several decades at Cedar Point where she touched the lives of many of her employees and created long-lasting friendships.
In addition to sharing stories with her family, she enjoyed crocheting and knitting and would share her skills with anyone who asked. She blessed her family, friends, fellow church parishioners and the homeless with an uncountable number of hats, scarves, blankets, afghans and cloths, perfectly weaving a bit of love and peace into each stitch. She loved playing Rumoli, Chinese Checkers and cards games with her family. She was an active member of the Church of the Redeemer where she taught Sunday School and was an active member of the St. David’s and Altar Guild. She worked countless community meals and never hesitated to help anyone.
Betty’s greatest joy in life was her family. She leaves behind her husband of 56 years, William “Bill” Thompson; daughters, Pamala (Scott Kraus) Thompson of Florida, Michelle (Matt Tertel) Thompson of Michigan and Jennifer (Jesse) Vontell of Ohio. Deeply mourning her are her beloved grandchildren, Ashlee (Lester Nowak) Gosser of Ohio, Amber (Buwa) Galpoththawela of Maryland, Andrew Vontell and Erin Vontell of Ohio. She also had the greatest joy of being a Great Nanny to Lester Nowak IV and Rohen Galpoththawela. Betty is also survived by her mother, Maude; sisters, Donna Power and Alvina (Leo) Ryan; brothers, Ron (Melda) Dicks and Ken (Laura) Dicks, all of whom reside in Canada as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Stanley.
The family takes comfort knowing her resounding faith helped her as her illness progressed.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 3 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Dovin Funeral & Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that a donation be made to the Church of the Redeemer in Lorain for their community meal and other programs.
