Emil "Pope" L. Vancs, 86, of Sheffield Village, died Monday, November 5, 2007 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West, Lorain, following a brief illness.
He was born July 27, 1921 in Lorain, he moved to Sheffield Village in the early 1960's.
He served in the US Army during World War II as a radio dispatcher.
Emil worked at Lorain Works US Steel as a foreman in the shipping department for 36 years, retiring in the 1970's.
He was a member of St. Basil Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain.
Surviving is his son, Richard E. Vancs of Sheffield Village; a daughter, Mary Christine "Tina" Vancs of Sheffield Village; several nieces and nephews; brothers, George Vancs, John Vancs and Steve Vancs all of Lorain, and Trian Vancs of Newark; sisters, Ann Klanchar of Lorain, and Valaria Slack of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Eva V. (nee Ignatowicz) in 2004; parents, Theodore and Amalia (nee Fedor) Vancs; brothers, Ted Vancs, Joseph Vancs, and Tino Vancs; sisters, Kay Cucui, and Regina Vancs.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, with a saracusta at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by liturgy at 10:00 a.m. at St. Basil Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church, 2035 E. 31st Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Al Dogaru, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
