Ernest F. Klanchar, age 86, of Lorain, died on Sunday, March 25, 2007, at his residence, following a brief illness.
He was born on October 22, 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio. He had moved to Lorain after the 1924 Lorain Tornado, and has lived here for the rest of his life.
He was a member of St. Basil Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain.
Ernest had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp since 1938. He had worked on the South Pacific Islands doing surveying work. He was also employed by the City of Lorain and Avon Lake as a surveyor. He worked for Avon Lake for 17 years, before retiring in 1982.
He was an honorary member of the AMVETS Post #47.
Ernest enjoyed sports, including; baseball, football, and golf. He also enjoyed bowling, where he had broken various records and received many trophies. In 1985, he was inducted into the Lorain Bowlers Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed horse racing, going to Las Vegas, and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife Sophie "Annie" (nee Vancs), his daughter, Mary "Birdie" Szekeres, of Lorain, and a grandson, James Klanchar.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Frank and Theresa (nee Povh) Klanchar, and his sister, Dorothy Mack, in October 1996.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 27, from 4 -8 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a Saracusta will be held at 4:00 pm. Closing prayers will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday 9:30 am. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 am, at St. Basil Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church, 3000 Gary Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44055. The Rev. Fr. Andre Matthews will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Lorain.
