Gabina Candelaria Zavala (nee Balbuena), 91, of Lorain, passed away Friday, January 6, 2017 at Hospice of the Western Reserve, Westlake following a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 19, 1925 in Piedras Negras, Mexico, she came to Lorain in 1948 where she has lived since.
Gabina was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, and enjoyed reading, sewing, playing cards and gardening.
Surviving is her son, Julio Zavala Jr of Sarasota, Florida; daughters, Gloria (Jorge Flores) Zavala of Lorain, Yolanda (Michael) Dudek of Eastpointe, Michigan and Amparo Portillo of Dearborn, Michigan; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Julio Zavala in 2015; and a brother and 2 sisters.
A memorial mass for Gabina will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. John Retar, pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Chapel.
