Gardenia O. Phillips, (nee Porter), age 66, of Lorain, died on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at University Hospital of Cleveland, following a brief illness.
She was born on May 21, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio, moving to Lorain 34 years ago. She graduated from East Technical Institute in Cleveland and also attended Fenn College.
Gardenia was employed as a nurses aid at Crestwood Nursing Home, prior to this she was employed at the Lorain Ford Motor Plant for many years.
She was a member of the New Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Lorain.
Gardenia enjoyed cooking, reading, decorating flowers and enjoyed loving her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons: Bruce Slaughter, of Covington, TN, Maurice Slaughter, Kevin Slaughter-Ross, Otis Slaughter-Ross, and Jeffery Phillips, all of Lorain, daughter: Nadine Slaughter- Ross, of Lorain, 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, brothers: Donald Slaughter and Robert Slaughter, both of Cleveland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Mary (nee Slaughter)Porter, brother: Marvin Porter, a grandson: Demetrius Slaughter, a granddaughter: Jessica Gandy.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 2, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Rev. Peter Tower, pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
