Genevieve "Jean" Kolenda , (nee Loda) age 78, of Lorain, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center, Lorain, following a brief illness.
She was born on December 26, 1930 in Lorain where she was a life long resident.
Jean attended St. Stanislaus Grade School and graduated from Lorain High School in 1948. She also attended Dyke Spencerian Business College, Cleveland.
Jean was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter. She was an active lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, where she was president of the Ladies Guild and the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a housekeeper/cook for several priests at the parish. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at the liturgical services. She was the kitchen coordinator for the parish picnics, secretary for the PSR, member of the parish council and former choir member. She was a volunteer for the pastoral ministry with Community Health Partners Hospital and member of the Blue Star Mothers. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting. Jean was very dedicated to her church and to her family.
She is survived by her three sons, Rev. Deacon Edward (Krystyna) and Bob, both of Lorain, and Michael (Tammy) of Amherst, 5 grandchildren, Jan, Jozef, Derrick, Melissa and Matthew, 1 sister, Anna Chuppa of Holiday, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John E. Kolenda in 1992, her parents, Michael and Sophia (Sobotka) Loda, brother, John Loder and sister, Irene Loda.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a Parastas will be held at 7 pm, officiated by the Very Rev. Fr. Basil Stoyka, Pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:00 a.m., in the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 a.m. mass at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Rev. Fr. Charles Henkle, OFM Conv., will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
