George J. "Shires" Kress, age 89, of Lorain, died on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Community Health Partners HSC - West, Lorain, after a brief illness.
George was known for his warm smile and light-hearted personality. He was a bright spot in many peoples' lives and will be missed by many who were lucky enough to know him.
He was born on June 8, 1919 in Lorain, where he resided for his entire life, attending Lorain City Schools. George served in the United States Army, as a Sergeant durin World War II, earning the American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon with one bronze star, Philippine Liberation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal.
George was employed as a pipe fitter at National Tube Lorain Works US Steel), retiring from there in 1982. Previous to this, he worked in construction and concrete work, along with working at Mascon Toys and at Steel Stamping as well.
He was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church, where he was an usher and volunteered for many of their Vegas Nights and church festivals. George was an officer and at one time, the president of the Czarnecki Lodge #1430. He was also a member of the VFW in Avon, the River Rats and the Hunky-Town Reunion Committee.
He enjoyed traveling and camping with his late wife, Marge. He also loved spending time with his granddaughters and family, watching Wheel-of-Fortune and Jeopardy, and watching sports on TV.
George is survived by his daughter, Candace (Leonard) Jungbluth, of Sheffield Village, and his 2 granddaughters; Vanessa and Adriane Jungbluth, both of Sheffield Village.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Margaret I. (nee Abahazi), on Sept. 10, 1995, his parents; Frank, in 1953 and Helen T. (nee Turman), in 1982, his brother, Frank P., in 1991, and his sister, Emma Morano, in 1982.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 19, from 4-8 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where prayers will be held the following morning at 9:30 am. A funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am, at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. The Rev. Fr. Thomas Smith, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with full military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign War Mullen-Murray Post #451.
