George Oniga

George Oniga, age 90, of Hamburg, New York, formerly of Lorain, died Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Autumn View Health Care Facility, Hamburg, NY.
He was born on April 2, 1916 in Scalp Level, PA, and had lived in Lorain County, Cleveland, Brooklyn, and Eastlake, Ohio from 1916 until his move in 1976, to Hamburg, NY, where he resided for the past 30 years.
He worked as a Master Tool and Die maker for Fruehauf, Kirby Mfg., Leece-Neville, the Cadillac Tank Plant, and National Screw. He also worked for RB&W in Mentor, Ohio, where he was a Tool Methods Engineer.
He received his teaching degree from Lincoln Technical Institute, Aurora, NY in 1985 and taught machine shop at the Lakeshore BOSES school in Angola, NY until 1994. He also headed the tool and die apprenticeship program for the Willoughby-Eastlake School system.
Mr. Oniga established Poppies' Custom Molds, in Hamburg, NY, in 1994 and was active in its operation until his death.
He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Chesterland, and was a third degree Knight of Columbus. He had also served in the Ohio National Guard, with the 142nd infantry for six years, attaining the rank of sergeant.
He is survived by his daughter, Carol Jean Minnick (Donald, Jr.), of Hamburg, NY, two grandsons; Donald III (Ann Marie) and Craig, two great grandsons; Donald IV and Conner, all of Hamburg, NY, and his eldest brother, Louis Oniga Jr., of Parma, OH.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Florence (nee Vanche), in 1993, his mother, Flora (nee Roja), in 1968, his father, Louis, Sr., in 1976, and a brother, John, in 2003.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 8, 2007, from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m., at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. A Divine Liturgy will follow at 1:30 p.m. at St. Basil Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church, 3000 Gary Avenue, Lorain. The Rev. Fr. Andre Matthews will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Lorain.
