George "DJ" Vancs, 85, of Lorain, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a short illness.
Born Jan. 28, 1923 in Lorain, he lived here his entire life. George served as a gunner's mate, 2nd class in the US Navy aboard the USS Mervine during World War II. He received the Victory Medal, American Area Medal, European Theater of Operations Medal with one bronze star, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
He worked for Lorain Works US Steel as an expeditor for 41 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Basil Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church, the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104, AARP, the Patria Romana Club, and the Union and League of Romanian Societies of America. He was also a life member of Amvets Post 47, and an auxiliary member of the Italian American Veterans Post 1.
In 1949, George played baseball for the Cleveland Indians minor league team as a pitcher, winning 13 out of 18 games. George then played and managed softball for Fatty's Sports Club in Lorain, going to the state championship in 1952. George played baseball and softball for several local baseball and softball teams over the years having won many championships.
Besides his passion for baseball and softball, George enjoyed golf and horse racing.
Surviving are his brothers, John and Steve both of Lorain, and Traian of Newark; sisters Valaria Slack of Amherst, and Sophie Ann Klanchar of Amherst; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Vancs and Amalia (nee Feher); bothers, Joseph Vance, Teodore Vancs, Leon Vancs, and Emil Vancs; sisters, Mary Simko, Lucretia Cook, and Regina Vancs.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 3:00 - 7:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Albert Marflak will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 combined with the American Legion Post 30.
