Helen Cox, (nee Rilko), of Lorain, passed away peacefully after a 2 month illness. She was a long time resident of Lorain where she moved shortly after being born in Marblehead, Ohio.
She attended Lorain High School. She is survived by 3 children, son, John (Marilyn) Cherney, of Vermilion, 2 daughters, MaryEllen (Vance) Bailey, of Lorain and Eva Marie Cox, of Westlake, one grandson, Kenneth Cherney and many special nieces and nephews that she loved dearly and her beautiful white schnauzer, Olliver.
She was preceded in death by her "Jack" Ernest J. Cox, March 22, 2007, her parents, Peter and Helen (nee Dziak) Rilko, sisters, Lillian Rilko, Frances Siwerka, MaryEllen Rupp and Gladys Benco.
She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lorain, belonging to it's Ladies Guild. She was also a 50 year member of Lake Erie Ohio Chapter #167 of the Moose, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW #451, as well as the Fraternal Order of Eagles #442, of Lorain, and the Salaried Retirees Club (Ford Engine Plant, Brookpark).
Helen loved traveling especially with her family. In 1964 the entire family attended the New York World's Fair. She also attended the World War II 389th Bomb Group Reunion with her "Jack" annually. She also enjoyed a yearly vacation in Upper Wisconsin where her loving husband was born. Aside from traveling she loved any and all holidays as it gave her a reason to decorate, bake and be with her loving family. In the 60's she and a group of her friends took ceramic classes together where she enjoyed giving them as gifts.
Age didn't slow her love for traveling down as she celebrated her 91st birthday by taking a trip which included "High Tea" at the Greenbriar, in West Virginia. Two days later she had dinner at Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah, Georgia where the entire restaurant sang her "Happy Birthday".
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 2, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain where a Rosary service will be conducted at 3:00 pm. The family will also receive friends on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 317 W. 15th Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. David Novak, pastor of Holy Trinity Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
