Helen Mary Maziarz (nee Knitter), age 94, of Lorain, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at her residence while under the care of University Hospital Hospice following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 29, 1922 in Lorain, she was a lifelong resident of the city. She was a graduate of Lorain High School class of 1941B.
Helen worked as a bookkeeper at Hills Department Store in South Lorain for 20 years until the store closed in 1982.
She was member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Lorain. Helen was active in the monthly Nativity BVM class of 1937 dinner group, and the Hills #4 retiree group monthly luncheon group, the high school breakfast group. As an amateur radio operator, she enjoyed visiting with friends via the airways under call letters K8NQD. She loved writing letters, reading and music.
Surviving are her sons, John F. Jr. of Lorain, James J. of Rochester Township and Stanley A. of Lorain; daughters, Mary F. Dunfee-Schatz of Rochester Township, Frances M. Tolson of Laredo, Texas and Jolen A. Maziarz of Akron; 23 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and a great great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her daughters, Anne M. Davis in 2016 and Mary Ann Maziarz in 1945; a son, Joseph F. in 2001; parents, Joseph and Mary (nee Miszczak) Knitter; and a brother, Charles W. Knitter in 1983; and her husband of 46 years, John F. Maziarz in 1988.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 - 5:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialist, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Monday at 9:30 am followed by Mass at 10:00 am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, 418 W. 15th Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Robert Glepko, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
