Ignacio Chavez, Sr., of Lorain died July 14, 2010 at his home surrounded by his children. Mr. Chavez was born May 24, 1920, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In 1940, he married the love of his life Antonia Chavez. He moved to Lorain in 1953 in search of a better life and education for his children. His family joined him in 1954.
Mr. Chavez was a member of the Church of Saint Peter in Lorain.
Mr. Chavez was employed by The Ford Motor Company for 33 years and was honored by the company for service and attendance. He was a member of the UAW Local 1250 in Brookpark, Ohio. He retired in 1986 to be with his wife and children and grandchildren.
At the age of 86, Mr. Chavez became a Knight of Columbus. He was affiliated with the North Olmsted Council #4731, and the Bishop O'Reilly Assembly #816 Lakewood, Ohio. He was a 4th Degree Sir Knight and was awarded the "Shining Armor" Award. He was glad to be joined by three sons, a son-in-law and three grandsons all 4th Degree Sir Knights. Two of his grandchildren were Knights of Columbus "Youths of the Year".
He enjoyed being with his family and watching his grandchildren grow and play in organized sports. He was an avid reader and gardener that grew many different and exotic plants in his gardens.
Surviving Mr. Chavez are his children Ignacio "Iggy" Chavez, Jr. of Lorain, Rudolph J. Chavez, Sr. of North Ridgeville; Alice Chavez-Holland (Michael) of Amherst; Richard P. Chavez (Marilyn) of Louisville, Kentucky; George Chavez of North Olmsted; Myrna Chavez-Tomazic (Dennis) of Lorain; Edward Chavez, Sr. (Deborah) of Lorain and Randolph J. Chavez (Linda) of Cincinnati, Ohio. He had fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife Antonia Chavez and his daughters Margaret Chavez and Leticia Chavez-Fischer (Robert)
Friends may call Sunday, July 18, 2010, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Church of Saint Peter, 3655 Oberlin Avenue Lorain, Ohio 44053. A Rosary service will be held by the Knights of Columbus at 7:00 p.m. Prayer services will be held on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Dovin Funeral Home 2701 Elyria Avenue Lorain, Ohio 44055 followed by a Funeral Mass at the Church of Saint Peter, 3655 Oberlin Avenue Lorain, Ohio 44053. The Rev. Charles Henkle, OFM Conv. will officiate the mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
