James Andorka Jr., 72 of Lorain, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Amherst Hospital of Orthopedic and Specialty Services following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Lorain on Dec. 22, 1937, to the late James Andorka Sr. and Mary (nee Szep) Andorka, and lived here his entire life.
James graduated from Lorain High School in 1956 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He played as the fifth starter on 1955-56 basketball team that won the Buckeye Conference and was ranked among Ohio's top 10 teams. In 2003, his basketball team was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame. After high school, James served in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Great Sitkin, until 1960.
James retired from the Lorain County Employment Training Administration in 1998, where he worked as a job placement specialist for 15 years. Prior to that, he worked as a housing inspector from 1976 thru 1983 and as a salesman in the automotive department of Sears Roebuck from 1960 thru 1976. His first job was a pin setter at Andorka's Bowling Alley in Lorain.
He was an avid Ohio State and Cleveland sports fan. His also enjoyed watching television and family activities including family picnics. James was always active in his son's sports activities, teaching and guiding them through their youth.
Surviving is are his sons, Gary of Columbus, Keith of Sheffield Village, and Dale of Amherst; grandchildren, Maggie and Julie of Sheffield Village, and Jymi and Charlie of Columbus; and a sister Sylvia Lesner of Lorain.
Barbara (nee Flechsenhaar), his wife of 43 years and high school sweet heart, preceded him in death in 2004.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 to 9:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9:30 am in the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 418 W. 18th St., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Robert Glepko, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 will conduct with full military honors.
