James H. Craig, 89, of Lorain, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 20 1921 in Waynesburg, Pa., to the late Paul and Dorothy (nee Benington) Craig. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Landing Craft (FF) 504 and received the Victory, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific and Good Conduct Medals. Following the service, he came to Lorain in the late 1940's where he has lived since.
James worked for 12 years at Lorain Works US Steel in the Burnt Lime Plant, retiring in 1983. Prior to this, he worked for 23 years at Fruehauf in Lorain as a material handler.
He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104, and the Amvets Post 47, and Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 both of Lorain. He enjoyed sports, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are his sons, Tim J. and Barry H. both of Lorain; step son, Donn Worthen of Rocky River; step daughter, Becky Worthen of Toledo; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy (nee Worthen) in 1997; a brother, Eugene; and sisters, Ruth Barnes and Faye Craig.
Family and friends are asked to gather for graveside services on Monday at 11:00 am at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will conduct military honors. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain is handling the arrangements.
