James P''Simer

James S. "Steve" P'Simer, 56 of Amherst, passed away Saturday, November 08, 2008 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.


Born Sept. 19, 1952 in Charleston, West Virginia; he has lived in Amherst for the past 53 years. Steve graduated from Marion L. Steele High School in 1971. He received training through the United States Army Naval Cryptologic Officer's Basic Course, and attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Northern Virginia Community College, Lorain Business College and he completed the Dale Carnegie Leadership for Managers Course.


He served in the US Army as a Chapel Activities Specialist from 1975 to 1979 in Hawaii, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, one Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious service and the Good Conduct Medal.


Steve worked as the operations manager in sales and service for Jacco Industries in Hudson for the last 5 years. Prior to that, he was the owner and operator of Steve's Refrigeration in Lorain. He had over 30 years in the HVAC trades as a skilled journeyman.


Steve was a long time Amherst City Ward 3 Councilman, serving as either a member or chairman of all committees. He was a member of the Lorain County Democratic Central and Executive Committeeman and served as secretary of the Amherst City Democratic Party. He was also a 15 year board member for the Lorain County Labor Agency. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Amherst, a Lorain soccer coach, and a Marion L. Steele High School Band Booster. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, tending to his fish pond, and playing with his grandson James.


Surviving is his wife of 25 years, Victoria L. (nee Solomon); daughters, Theresa Marie and Amy Nicole both at home, and Lani Kai Majzoub of Elyria; a grandson, James Tyler; his mother, Marian Grace P'Simer of Georgetown, Florida; bothers, John Franklin P'Simer Jr., of Roanoke, Virginia and David P'Simer of Myakka City, Florida; and a sister, Jo Ann Kiefer of Perrysburg, Ohio.


He was preceded in death by his father, John F. P'Simer Sr., in March of this year.


The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:00 pm. Rev. Mike Plog, pastor of Faith Baptist Church, Amherst, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp, where the American Legion Post 30 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 will conduct military honors.
