John S. Abrahamowicz

John S. Abrahamowicz, 90, of Lorain, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home, Lorain, following a short illness.


He was born Feb. 18, 1916 in Lorain, and has lived here his entire life.


John graduated from Lorain High School class of 1934 B.


He worked as a group leader for Lorain Works US Steel for 40 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, and the Holy Name Society there. In 1994, John was recognized as Holy Name Man of the Year. He was also a member of the United Steelworkers Union Local #1104, the Polish American Citizens Club, United Polish Club, and the Polish National Alliance.


John's 35 year baseball career landed him with a Class A baseball team, "Lorain Nation Tube", that was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 for its winning of the National Amateur Baseball Federation Championship in 1957. Besides this great achievement, John had been on the winning side of city, county, and state sandlot championships.


He enjoyed baseball, dancing, golfing, fishing, hunting and bowling.


Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Julia (nee Zalenski), son, Jan of Amherst; daughter Carol Butchko of Henrietta; 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Phillips of Lorain.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Abrahamowicz in 1948, and Mary (nee Dziwczur) Abrahamowicz in 1952; brothers, Walter Abrahamowicz, Joe Abrahamowicz and Henry Abrahamowicz; a sister, Ann Abrahamowicz.


The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where the Holy Name Society of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church will conduct a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 9:45 a.m. in the funeral home followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, E. 28th and Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. David Novak, administrator, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
