John R. Bevell, age 71, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, died on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Virginia, following a battle with cancer.
He was born on June 15, 1937 in Memphis, TN. He lived in Lorain for many years before moving to Virginia 2 years ago.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Widgeon in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
John was employed as a pipe inspector at US Steel, retiring in 1984 after many years of service.
He enjoyed playing the organ.
He is survived by his sisters, Betty Jeanette Littlejohn, of Roanoke, VA, Jessie Joanne Rodgers, of Lawrenceburg, TN, Debbie Jean Marcum, of Logan, WV, nieces, Edith Ann Davis, of Rocky Mount, VA, Connie Matherne, of Desallamends, LA, Christine Frakes, of Chicago, IL, Kathleen Rodgers, of Bay Springs, MS, nephews, John Littlejohn, of Sardis, MS, James Littlejohn, of Water Valley, MS, step-son, Gary (Carol) Lyons, of Amherst and step-granddaughters, Maddy and Audrey Lyons.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 16 years, Betty Jean (nee Hall) Bevell, in 1981, parents, Amely A. and Annie (nee Davis) Bevell, sister, Edith Ann Bevell and longtime companion, Dolores Lyons.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. until time of services at 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. The Rev. Jay Roller, Pastor of Grace Baptist Church, will officiate. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, is handling the arrangements.
