John T. Chadwick

June 16, 1916 — June 20, 2006

John T. "Chad" Chadwick, 90, of Lorain, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at Specialty Hospital of Lorain following a two month illness.


He was born June 16, 1916 in Strong, Pennsylvania, coming to Lorain in 1947 where he has lived since.


He enlisted in the US Marine Corp. in August of 1934 and was assigned to the Pearl Harbor Navel Yard in Honolulu. From 1937 through 1939 he served aboard the U.S.S. Henderson before being sent to Gilbert Islands in 1943 where he was wounded in combat and received his first purple heart. That same year, during the invasion of Saipan, Chadwick was in charge of 22 soldiers that where on an amphibious tractor that landed on the beach where a battle took place and he was one of 11 that survived. Chadwick had received severe wounds to his left eye, earning him his second purple heart. Chadwick was discharged in 1945.


In 1947, "Chad" started working at the American Ship Building that lead to a lifelong career in the pipefitting building trade.


He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, Lorain, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign War post 1079 in Elyria.


He enjoyed going out to breakfast, especially at Chris Restaurant, reading and visiting with neighbors.


He is survived by a brother, Robert Chadwick of York, PA, and many nieces and nephews, and his friend, Dolly Forthofer of Elyria.


He was preceded by wife of 27 years, Mary Lou (nee Ockajik) in 1978, brother, Joseph, who died during World War II, a sister, Victoria Budraitis in 2005.


Visitation Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Ralph Krupp, deacon of the Church of St. Peter, Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. The Disabled American Veteran Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 will conduct full military honors.
