John A. Given

John Arthur Given, 87, passed away peacefully at Denise's Adult Care Home in Lorain OH, on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 after a brief illness. John was born November 24, 1928 in Lorain OH to the late Winfield and Mary Given (Sullivan) and lived in Lorain his entire life. He worked for forty years as a metallurgist/spectrographic technician and was a proud union member at US Steel in Lorain, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and all animals.
John was a member of the former St. Stanisluas Catholic Church, Lorain, where he serviced as a councilman and was an active member of the Holy Name Society. He also attended St. Peter Parish, Lorain.
John was a much-loved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He lost his wife of 43 years, Genevieve (Jurczyk) in 2003. Surviving family include his three children, Ret. Lieutenant Colonel Terry (Lenora) Given of Centreville, VA, Dan Given of Lorain, OH, and Nora (Aaron) Lewis of Amherst Township, OH; six grandchildren, Brian, Jenna, Jacqueline, Nikki, Danny, and Sammi; and two great grandsons, Henry and Finn.
In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Given and his sister, Betty Heath.
The family will receive friends at Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain OH, on Sunday November 27th from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. Closing prayers will take place at 9:30 am on Monday November 28th at Dovin's, followed by a 10 am Funeral Mass at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 309 7th Street, Lorain OH. Rev. Daniel O. Divis, pastor will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
