John Guba, 89, of Amherst, died at Amherst Manor Nursing Home, Tuesday, November 20, 2007 after a brief illness.
He was born July 9, 1918 in Tyler, PA. He moved to Lorain, in 1918 and then moved to Amherst in 1959.
He served with the US Army during World War II as a Technical Sergeant. John, who was a member of the Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, received the Distinguished Unit Badge, and the Second Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment Award, for his heroic and outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy which resulted in the destruction of the Japanese forces on Hill 700, Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, and Solomon Island on the 11th and 12th of March, 1944. He also received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star.
He was employed and retired from American Crucible Company. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, friends and swimming at the YMCA.
Survivors include brother, Nick Guba, of Lambertville, Michigan; a sister, Mary Lou Turner, of Vero Beach, Florida; and many nieces and nephews throughout the country.
He was married to Eleanor (nee Snyder) for 48 years, who preceded him in death in May, 2006.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary (nee Kovalich) Guba; brothers, Harold Guba, Peter Guba, Frank Guba; and a sister Anna Schriber.
Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 23, 2007 in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be held at Saturday 8:45 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a 9:30 a.m. mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst, Ohio. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The National Honor Guard will provide military honors.
