John F. Gwillim, age 80, of Lorain, died on Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at his residence.
He was born on December 28, 1925 in East McKeesport, PA. He moved to Lorain in 1941, and attended Lorain City Schools. He had also resided in Kansas City, Missouri for a period of his life.
John was in the US Army for 29 years, from March 1944 until July , 1973, where he earned the rank of Master Sergeant throughout his many years of service. He was in WW II , Korean War and the Vietnam War veteran, where he had earned Eight Service Stripes, an Overseas Service Bar, a Good Conduct Medal BZ Clasp with 5 LPS, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, a Vietnam Service Medal, and an Army Commendation Medal.
He was employed at the National Tube Company, Lorain for a short time.
John was a life-long learner and seeker-of-knowledge, following his retirement he enjoyed reading, music, sharp shooting and researching his engineer battalion campaign of WWII as well as his WWII Reunions. John was a true patriot.
He is survived by his daughters; Christine Furr, of Dallas, TX, and Heidi Marie McGinnis, of Denver, CO, 3 grandchildren and his 3 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Emma (nee; Langer) Gwillim, a sister: Geraldine Chizmadia and a grandson, Mark Furr.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, November 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain, with full military honors. The Rev. Heidi McGinnis will officiate. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, is handling the arrangements.
