John M. Herda, age 83, of Lorain, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Herda was born on June 26, 1921 in Ligonier, PA and had moved to Lorain in 1946, spending the winters in North Port, FL, since 1981.
He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter.
He was a member of the United States Navy, serving primarily in the Panama Canal, during the World War II.
Mr. Herda was employed by U.S. Steel for 37 years in the Shipping Department, retiring in 1981. He was also a member of the Steelworker's Union, Local #1104, Lorain.
He had enjoyed reading, fishing, playing cards, traveling, and crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Agnes (nee Gdovin), four sons; John T., Richard, Kenneth, and Dale, all of Lorain, a daughter, Joanne Grandon, of Avon, 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, a brother, Rudolph Herda, of Ambridge, PA, and a sister, Rose Volpe, of Greensburg, PA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (nee Petros) Herda, 6 brothers, Victor, Guy, Julius, Steve, Paul, and Joseph Herda.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at 11:00 at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, 44053 where the Rev. Fr. Chuck Henkle, associate Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain.
