John P. Ockajik, 67, of Lorain, joined our Lord in Heaven on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Mercy New Life Hospice, Lorain. He was born May 30, 1949 in Lorain to the late John Ockajik, Jr. and Marie Olive (nee Cogan) Ockajik. John was their only child.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda (nee Bays); sons, John E. and Jeffrey A. both of Lorain; a grandson, John A. of Gilbert, Arizona; and a granddaughter, Madyson Ockajik of Orem, Utah. John has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends across the country. He also leaves behind his loving, caring friends at The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, where he served as a board member. The opening of Valor Home filled John with pride.
John graduated from Lorain High School in 1968 and went to work at Lorain Works US Steel. Soon after, he was called to serve his country in the Vietnam War. He became a Navy Seabee, MCB-3 where he helped to clear and build firebases and air fields so our troops could be protected better. John returned to US Steel when his "stint" was over. He worked at the Lorain steel plant for 49 years, before retirement. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.
When his sons were old enough, John served as a Den Leader, Cubmaster, and Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Pack/Troop 395. He served as a trainer for the Firelands Council, BSA.
