John J. “Cottontop” Onofry Sr., age 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2022 at his home in Elyria under the care of New Life Hospice.
Born December 4, 1946 in Lorain to John and Iva Onofry, John spent his entire life in Lorain county. He worked for U.S. Steel for 31 years before his retirement in 1999.
He loved riding his motorcycle, going down to Lakeview to watch the boats, watching westerns and spending time with his family and his dogs. John also enjoyed watching the L.A Rams and the Celtics and listening to “oldies” music and going to car shows.
Surviving is his wife of 19 years, Rhonda (nee Gamble) Onofry; children, Kimberly Onofry, John Onofry Jr., Cris (Rose) Onofry, Jeremy (Megan) Onofry and Jerome (Lori) Onofry; grandchildren, Justin, Richard, Brandon, Blayze, Dalton, Isiah, Jacob, Jeremy Jr., and Adeline as well as his great grandchildren, Richard Jr. and Emily.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents as well as 7 siblings.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 3 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Dovin Funeral & Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, August 4 at 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Midway Baptist Church, 41812 Griswold Rd, Elyria. Rev. Rick Keesee will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
