John D. Rebman Sr., 85, of Lorain, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at EMH Regional Medical Center, Elyria following a short illness.
Born July 23, 1922 in Lorain, he lived in Marion, S. Carolina from 2004 to 2006 before returning to Lorain.
John served in the US Army during World War II with the Battery A 491st Artillery Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Battalion as a Cannoneer, having loaded, set up, elevated sights and fired a 40 mm AA cannon and a 155 mm gun. He participated in ground combat in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.
John owned and operated Rebman's Market on Grove Ave, in Lorain for 25 years. He then worked for Fligner's Market in Lorain as a meat cutter for 30 years.
Surviving is his wife of 38 years, Leona (nee Bailey); a daughter, Cheryl "Dee Dee" Rodgers of Norwalk; a step son, Walter L. Marks of Marion, S. Carolina; a step daughter, Betty Lou Hritsko of Sebring, Florida; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; brothers, Eugene Rebman of Lorain, and Art Rebman of Norfolk, Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his son, John D. Rebman on June 20th, 2007; parents, John Rebman and Margaret (nee Zettel) Rebman; sisters, Margaret Hospodar in 2002, Kathleen Boey and Lena Mikulan in 1966.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:00 am in the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the Church of St. Peter, Lorain, will officiate. Entombment will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
